AMELIORATIVE EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF BAUHINIA MONANDRA ON HEMATOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF PLASMODIUM BERGHEI INFECTED MICE

Introduction: The progression of malaria is characterized by anemia and elevated serum levels
of liver enzymes.
Aim: The purpose of the study was to assess the impacts of the ethanol-based extract of B.
monandra on the hematological and biochemical parameters of Plasmodium berghei
infected mice.
Methods: A total of 25 mice were injected intraperitoneally with P. berghei (resistant ANKA
clones), while an additional 5 mice remained uninfected to act as the normal control and were
designated as group 6. The negative control (group 5) received distilled water only. The
positive control group (group 4) was treated with ACT and served as the positive control.
Meanwhile, groups 1, 2, and 3 were orally given B. monandra extract at doses of 50, 100, and
150 mg/kg body weight, respectively, for a duration of three days. The effects of the leaf extract
of B. monandra on liver enzymes (alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase)
and hematological parameters of P. berghei-infected mice were studied using standard
methods.
Results: The parasitized control mice showed significantly elevated serum ALT and AST
activities compared to all other groups. However, parasitized mice administered the extract and
those treated with ACT exhibited similar (p > 0.05) serum ALT and AST activities.
Furthermore, each of the extract doses utilized demonstrated a stimulating effect on red blood
cell production after the treatment was administered.
Conclusion: This plant holds great promise for the amelioration of liver damage and the
formation of blood cells.
