CATALOGUING AND CLASSIFICATION TOOLS IN AN ACADEMIC LIBRARY: INSIGHTS FROM A TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN AT SULE HAMMA LIBRARY, NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY KANO, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study explored the cataloguing and classification tools used in the Technical Services Unit of
Sule Hamma Library, Northwest University Kano, Nigeria, from the perspective of a technical
services librarian. A qualitative case study design was adopted, and data were collected through
a semi-structured interview with a purposively selected technical services librarian. The interview
data were analysed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) framework. The
findings revealed that the Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Anglo-American Cataloguing
Rules, Second Edition (AACR2), and the Catalogue Cabinet constitute the principal tools used for
organizing and retrieving library resources. The participant perceived these tools as effective in
promoting bibliographic consistency, efficient shelf organization, and improved information
retrieval. However, challenges such as unstable electricity supply, inadequate internet
connectivity, lack of automation, and limited opportunities for continuous professional
development were identified as major constraints affecting technical service operations. The study
concludes that while standardized cataloguing and classification tools remain fundamental to
effective technical services in academic libraries, their optimal utilization depends on sustained
institutional support, reliable technological infrastructure, and continuous staff development.
Although the findings are limited to a single institutional case, the study provides valuable insights
into contemporary cataloguing practices and highlights areas for strengthening technical services
in Nigerian academic libraries.
