SELF-CONCEPT AND PARENTAL NEGLECT AS PREDICTOR OF ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN IDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT, IBADAN

Abstract

Anti-social behaviour is increasing in wide-range proportion and the range of the problem of

anti-social behaviour is wider than it seems. This problem is still on-going despite numerous

researches on anti-social behaviour. It is pertinent to investigate the factors affecting anti-social

behaviour. This study therefore examined self-concept and parental neglect as predictors of

anti-social behaviour among senior secondary school students in Ido Local Government in Oyo

state, Nigeria. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Two hundred

participants were selected from five secondary school in the metropolis using stratified

sampling technique. The participants ages was12.88±8.46 years and 52.5% were males. Three

research hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and T-test. The

findings revealed a significant positive relationships between parental neglect (r = .617, p

<.05), self-concept (r = .191, p <.05). There was no significant difference in the anti-social

behaviour of the male and female participants; t (193) =1.012, P. Based on this finding, it is

recommended that there should be positive parents-child relationship; seminars and workshops

should be organized on importance of parents-child relationship to curb anti-social behaviour.

Positive use of self-concept should be encouraged among adolescents. Also, School Counsellor

should intensify their efforts on the training of adolescent’s self-concept so as to curb antisocial

behaviour.
