Abstract
Community policing has emerged as a strategy to enhance crime control by fostering
collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities. This study aims to
evaluate the effectiveness of community policing in Kaduna Metropolis, Kaduna State,
Nigeria. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys (n=355),
interviews, and focus group discussions with police officers, community leaders, and residents
between 2023-2024. Quantitative analysis involved statistical tests to assess the impact of
community policing initiatives on crime rates, while qualitative data were thematically
analyzed to understand stakeholders' perspectives and experiences. Preliminary findings
suggest that community policing has positively influenced perceptions of safety and trust
between police and communities. However, challenges such as resource constraints, training
gaps, and community engagement persist, affecting the program's overall effectiveness. This
study fills the paucity of empirical research on community policing in Kaduna Metropolis and
contributes to the growing body of knowledge on community policing in Nigeria, providing
insights for policymakers and law enforcement agencies seeking to enhance crime control
strategies in urban settings.
